Blacklights

Blackligggghts! :D

I'm amazingly pleased by my layering work on the chest, so much subtle detail, and the blacklight glow really adds to the dramatic effect.

Costuming is important too!

The right outfit can make or break some special effects, and my friend wanted to come to the masquerade too, but had no idea what to wear. I took some time putting together an outfit for her that was both classy, interesting and masked.

This entire costume really suits her (she wears it well!). The main purchases were the corset and bustle, and everything else was just accessories.

The Grim Reaper

Another Labyrinth costume, this time I would be applying to my friend Andrea.

Pre-painting complete, ready for the big day!

More shading will be applied on the day, which will give it some very nice contrast, but no point in doing that until I can match the colour after its been applied to the face.

The reaper complete!

What an amazingly grim and frightening outfit it turned out to be. I provided the mask (colour and application) and skeletal hand colouring, but Andrea done a fantastic job of the costume and bringing it all together.

That staff rocks!

The Trade Prince (Pt. 3)

The day of the masquerade!

Simple green base layer and pre-painted ears added, the mask would prove to be a nightmare in blending past this point, but thankfully I was saved by a little help from my friends, and you can see the results in the next pic!

Things I learned from this whole affair; Well, for starters, I'm pretty sure I'm done with applying masks to myself. Not only was it incredibly difficult to apply a pre-painted mask in the mirror (I was peeling large chunks off it with sticky spirit-gum fingers!), but the blending later was ultimately stressful too!

From now on, i'll only be applying masks with all of my time and ability to other people, and I won't be rushing. :)

BAM! How do you like the Goblin Trade Prince?

The whole look was aiming for an almost ridiculous wedge-shaped silhouette of the head, with a small body, bedecked in as much false gold as possible, as if this little goblin had just come into ridiculous wealth, and was going to show everyone!

This pic was taken near the end of the night, and despite some wear and tear, the whole thing held up a lot better than I thought it would under alcoholic conditions! :p

Thanks to awesome LED blacklights, my blacklight sensitive contact lenses shone like a corrupted sun! The mask blending turned out fantastic, and the whole outfit really pulled together better than I thought it would, all the way from the fence chain wrapped round one arm, to the mask itself.

Airbrushing & Camping - A 'heady' mix...

I just realised I don't have too many shots of me at work, so here is one (albeit incredibly disgusting from the usual mid-summer sweaty camping shennanigans). This is one of the few faces I did at Boogaloo Mountain Jam.

I'd never worked on kids before, so I was wary of going anywhere near the eyes and mouth, but I actually found the reverse of what I expected happened, and this kid was actually more receptive to direction and well behaved than most adults I've tried to spray! :)

Shortly after this point I handed over to Jayson, who did a really good job of learning on the spot and taking over for the rest of the night.

And an 'instagram' version of the final result (alevbit taken the next day, so quite a bit of wear):

I came back a little later to do one or two more, here is another one of the few faces I did at Boogaloo Mountain Jam.

This was a variation on 'Karuna's Tiger' from previously, where I had wanted to try a more tribal feel underneath the red spikes. Overall, turned out really well!

Teaching my 'apprentice', who, like a trouper, worked through the whole night after I showed him how to get started, and a few tips. Great job, Jayson!

The Trade Prince (Pt. 2)

Pre-painting complete, ready for the masquerade ball! This Goblin trade-prince looks like he is almost ready for a whirl!

So it was no easy feat here, had to use everything I knew about the make-up, airbrushing, and highlighting (thanks miniature painting knowledge, you came in handy!) but doing it now has clearly shaved off at least a couple of hours on the day.

Got far too close to the edges, but airbrushing is just so smooth! I may have trouble blending the piece when its applied, we shall see!

If you are wondering, the mask started out as a light cream colour, like this (from my first outing):
